We started In Search of Old Growth to make films about forests and humans’ evolving relationship to them. We call it a ‘living film series’, as each episode reflects our shared experience of a unique creative period, with its own material limitations, research interests, and collaborative possibilities. Our ongoing conversation across mediums (film and music) invites viewers to meditate on who we are in relation to the natural world and, by extension, to one another.
An old growth forest is one that has not undergone a major environmental catastrophe for at least a thousand years. These forests serve an essential function in storing carbon, in purifying water systems, in maintaining healthy nutrient cycles, and in providing a home for a wealth of species of flora and fauna. Signs that you might be walking beneath an old growth canopy include rich biodiversity as well as evidence of decay: a process which feeds the mycorrhizal networks so essential to communication between trees. In «Entangled Life», biologist Merlin Sheldrake describes these networks in forests:
The networks are inconceivably complicated, their implications huge and still poorly understood. Imagine the puzzlement of an extraterrestrial anthropologist who discovered, after decades of studying modern humanity, that we had something called the Internet. It’s a bit like that for contemporary ecologists.
In our search for old growth forests, we must account for their absence. Where does our search begin? Perhaps in the most important preservation tool we have — the human imagination.

Nous avons commencé In Search of Old Growth pour réaliser des films sur les forêts et sur la relation évolutive des humains avec elles. Nous disons de ce projet au long-cours qu’il est une “série vivante”, car chaque épisode reflète notre expérience partagée d’une période créative unique ayant ses propres limites matérielles, intérêts de recherche et possibilités de collaboration. Notre conversation continue à travers les médiums (film et musique) invite le regardeur à méditer sur qui nous sommes dans notre relation au monde naturel et, par extension, les uns par rapport aux autres.
Une forêt primaire est une forêt qui n’a pas subi de catastrophe environnementale majeure depuis au moins mille ans. Les signes indiquant que vous marchez peut-être sous une canopée de forêt primaire incluent une riche biodiversité ainsi que des preuves de décomposition : un processus qui alimente le réseau mycorhizien si essentiel à la communication entre les arbres. Dans “Le monde caché”, le biologiste Merlin Sheldrake décrit la nature des réseaux mycorhiziens dans les forêts :

ENChloé Mossessian is a French Visual Artist and Filmmaker living and working between the Pyrenées-Orientales and Pau, France. She graduated from Beaux-Arts de Paris with “Félicitations du jury” in 2016 and studied experimental filmmaking at The Cooper Union in New York City, where she met composer Hank Mittnacht. She then worked at the French Institute Alliance Française in New York City as a videographer, video editor and photographer.
Working across film, photography and collage- installations, Chloé develops her projects based on the geohistory of the places she inhabits. In 2023, she made Alentour — an essay-film about the print of time in the landscapes of her youth.
In 2022, she co-founded In Search of Old Growth with composer Hank Mittnacht, with whom she has been collaborating on films since 2019 including Concert for the Sun (2019), The Hat (2020), Underground River (2021), Hidden Forests (2022), Manel’s Fountain (2023) andParler forêt (2023).

Chloé Mossessian (1992) est une artiste-cinéaste française. Elle vit et travaille dans les Pyrénées. Elle est diplômée des Beaux-Arts de Paris avec les félicitations du jury en 2016, et a étudié le film expérimental à The Cooper Union de New York, où elle a ensuite habité et développé son travail de vidéaste et monteuse.
Sa pratique oscille entre film, photographie, installations vidéo et de papiers découpés. Travaillant de manière nomade, elle développe ses projets à partir de recherches sur la géohistoire des lieux dans lesquels elle habite, reliant l'intime aux paysages, en portraits discrets d'êtres aimés, de souvenirs ou de rêves.
En 2023, elle réalise un film-essai sur le paysage de son enfance, Alentour. Elle réalise également des films en collaboration avec le compositeur Hank Mittnacht (Hank Midnight): Concert for the Sun (2019), The Hat (2020), et Underground River (2021), et a co-fondé la série de films courts In Search of Old Growth (en cours).
ENHank Mittnacht (Hank Midnight) is an American songwriter and film composer from Titusville, New Jersey. After graduating cum laude from Middlebury College with high departmental honors and a BA in History, he matriculated at New York University, where he earned a Masters degree in Education and was honored with the Graduate Award for Excellence in Public Service. While teaching in schools in New York City, he honed his craft as a songwriter and music producer: it was through songwriting that, in 2015, he met French filmmaker, Chloé Mossessian, with whom he has been making films ever since. He currently lives and works in Pau, France.
Under the alias of Hank Midnight, he has released several EPs (Parkside, 2020; Gardens, 2020; Live Wire, 2021; Light of the Spac You’re In, 2023), an LP (Memory Box, 2022), a series of recent singles (River Song; And You; Aquamarine, 2023) and soundtracks (Concert for the Sun, 2019; The Hat, 2020; Underground River, 2021; Hidden Forests, 2022; Manel’s Fountain, 2023; Parler Forêt, 2023; Alentour, 2023). He is currently developing a collaborative EP with musicians from around the globe.

Hank Mittnacht est un auteur-compositeur du New Jersey (Etats-Unis). Après sa Licence en Histoire (departmental honors) du Middlebury College, il a obtenu un Master en Education à New York University. Alors qu’il enseigne dans les écoles de New York, il perfectionne son métier d’auteur-compositeur et de producteur de musique : c’est par le biais de sa musique qu’il rencontre Chloé Mossessian, avec qui il réalise depuis des films. Il vit et travaille à Pau, France.
Sous le pseudonyme de Hank Midnight, il a sorti plusieurs EPs (Parkside, 2020; Gardens, 2020; Live Wire, 2021; Light of the Space You’re In, 2023), un LP (Memory Box, 2022), une série de singles (River Song; And You; Aquamarine, 2023) et des musiques de films (Concert for the Sun, 2019; The Hat, 2020; Underground River, 2021; Hidden Forests, 2022; Manel’s Fountain, 2023; Parler Forêt, 2023; Alentour, 2023).
